3 of the Best Museums to Visit Near Fayetteville, NC

Our city of Fayetteville, NC, has a long and proud history. We were founded in 1783, and we’re now the 6th largest city in North Carolina. Much has happened in and around our city over the years, and it’s important to remember the past. To catalog and preserve our treasured history we’ve founded numerous museums for locals and visitors alike to know and understand our history. These are just a few of our best museums.

Edgar Allen Poe’s House

Affectionately known as the “E.A. House” in Fayetteville, this beautiful three-bay, two-story house was built in 1897. It isn’t, as many people have thought, the house of the novelist Edgar Allen Poe. The original owner was a successful businessman, civic leader, and politician. His house has been faithfully preserved. The house and its contents allow you to take a trip back in time to view the life of a wealthy family from the 1890s.

Guided tours are available and focus on the social, technological, and economic life of the times. Tours last one hour and are available from Tuesday to Saturday. The guides are excellent sources of information about not only the house but the history of Fayetteville too. The house also has a very interesting gift shop filled with unique gifts and souvenirs. You can find this beautiful house at 801 Arsenal Avenue.

Airborne and Special Operations Museum

This museum, located at 100 Bragg Boulevard, pays tribute to the men and women of the U.S. airborne and special forces. The fascinating set of tableaus transports you from the formation of the airborne concept in the 1940s, through WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and into the War on Terrorism. They have an incredible variety of original artifacts from each of these chapters on display.

There are also numerous vehicles forming part of the exhibits, including a C47 transport plane from WWII that hangs from the massive roof of the museum. Many of the staff and volunteers have a military connection, and they are fonts of information on the museum and its exhibits. The museum has an excellent gift shop with memorabilia and souvenirs. It’s also a great place to get a sentimental gift for a Veteran in your life.

Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum

Although the museum focuses on transport in and around the Cape Fear River, its also packed with information about Fayetteville itself. Sports, the police, trains, steamboats, and a huge variety of information about the local area are housed here. It’s a fascinating experience for the whole family to learn about how transportation helped to shape modern Fayetteville.

The smaller building focuses on transportation, while the larger two-story building next to it details local history. The knowledgeable staff can help you to understand the exciting events that have taken place around us over the years.
