Known for their exceptional performance engineering and next-gen consumer technology, BMW is at the forefront of advancements in the automotive industry. However, there is even more futuristic technology found behind the scenes than customers visiting our BMW dealership in Fayetteville, NC might expect.

The BMW Group pilot plant in Munich has acquired a robotic optical measuring cell: a fully automated 3D scanner attached to a robotic arm that can freely move around a vehicle to map it from all sides. Two robot arms equipped with two sensors each working in parallel allow BMW engineers to create a digital model of a full-sized vehicle with accuracy within 100 micrometers in less than half the time it used to require. The robots can be run during off-peak hours and even overnight.

“Length individual measurements and data collation are no longer needed, saving time and enhancing quality at the start of series production,” says Eduard Obst, BMW’s Head of Geometric Analysis, Measuring Technology and Cubing about the new robotic system.

The robotic optical measuring cell has been in use since 2015 to measure sheet metal parts and tools, but the next BMW 5-Series sedan will be the first vehicle manufactured with its use.
