In our last post, we discussed the design elements that have made name BMW synonymous with luxury cars. This week, you will learn about the performance elements of the brand that make these vehicles as thrilling to drive as they are comfortable.

BMW Crafts Performance From the Inside Out

Unlike many other automobile manufacturers, BMW doesn’t design the entire car at once. They start with the heart of the vehicle, the engine, and work outward from there. The latest BMW vehicles feature smooth power and greater acceleration thanks to a number of pioneering technologies.

The power output is increased thanks to an electronically controlled water pump. BMW’s patented Valvetronic system helps the vehicle get better fuel efficiency. Furthermore, the engine block is made of a lightweight composite magnesium/aluminum that saves weight — a groundbreaking innovation first introduced in 2004.

BMW recently began offering turbocharged engines in the U.S. for the first time in almost two decades. Turbo lag, the time between the throttle being opened and the turbocharger providing increased intake pressure, has been virtually eliminated thanks to a combination of:

  • Double-VANOS variable valve timing
  • Direct fuel injection
  • The latest TwinPower Turbo technology

By using a high precision fuel injection system, they have overcome the traditionally poor gas mileage of turbocharged engines, as well as providing a more thrilling drive.

Of course, it takes more than just an engine to make a car. Every BMW is equipped with a four-wheel fully independent suspension to ensure maximum stability and smoothness. With this type of suspension, each wheel reacts independently. This means that if the left rear wheel hits a hole while cornering, the right one stays in contact with the road and stability is maintained.

BMW enthusiasts recognize their vehicle’s near-perfect weight distribution as the source of its signature driving feel. When the weight of a car’s front and rear axles are balanced, the drive is more agile, as well as enhancing the vehicle’s safety. BMW engineers have succeeded in producing cars with almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution.
