5 Great Reasons to Get a Tire Rotation

Even a high-performance machine like a BMW needs regular tire care to maintain its top-notch responsiveness and handling. Periodical tire rotation is one important way to look after your tires, your vehicle performance, and your safety. Here are 5 reasons to head to your local BMW dealer when the time comes for rotation.

Uniform Tread Depth Keeps You Safer

As secure and reliable as BMWs are, reduced tread depth on any one tire can cause problems. The NHTSA found that inadequate tread depth leads to 25% of tire-related road accidents. If your treads aren’t deep enough on all four tires, you’re more likely to lose grip on surfaces made slippery by loose material, water, snow, or ice. All it takes is insufficient tread depth on a single tire to slip and potentially cause an accident.

When new, your BMW tires have a tread depth of 10/32 or 11/32 of an inch. It’s illegal to drive with tread depth of 2/32 of an inch or under, but you should consider replacements long before then, especially if you’re driving in winter. As tires tend to wear down unevenly depending on whether you have forward or rear-wheel drive, regular rotation allows you to ensure that all four tires wear down at about the same rate.

Reduce Risk of Blow Outs

For the most part, BMW vehicles have rear-wheel-drive, which means your back tires are under slightly more strain. Over time, they’ll undergo a little more wear and tear. If you never share the load around with rotation, and you also fail to notice excessive wear in those rear wheel treads, then you’re more likely to one day experience a blowout while driving.

Keep Your Handling Silky Smooth

The quality of your tires determines in large part how accurately you steer, how quickly you stop, and how smoothly you roll. If you’re closely attuned to the smoothness of your ride, as many BMW drivers are, then you might notice a rougher feel and slightly less responsive handling as a result of uneven tire wear. This roughness can often be fixed by rotating your tires.

Save Money On New Tires

On two-wheel-drive vehicles, it’s generally recommended to change your tires in sets of two, axle by axle. Rotation helps your tire pairs last that little bit longer. Over the long term, this saves you money on new tire purchases.

Keep Your BMW Dealer Warranty Valid

Perhaps the most important reason to get your tires rotated is to keep your warranty valid. For most BMWs, the recommended distance for rotation is every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, but this can vary from model to model. Make sure you check your owner manual and warranty to know what’s best for your car.
