7 Signs Your BMW Could Use a Transmission Repair

Having issues with your vehicle as it works its way through the gears? A transmission repair could be what’s needed to get your vehicle back into good condition. Here are some signs that tell you it’s time to visit your local BMW dealer to get this essential service carried out.

1. Strange Noises in Neutral

Keep an ear out for any unexpected noises that occur when your vehicle is sat in neutral. This could simply be an indication that your vehicle needs some replacement transmission fluid, but could also point to more serious issues with your transmission. Either way, taking your vehicle in for service is advisable before the problem gets worse.

2. Burning Odor Present

Noises can be a good indication of transmission trouble, but you should also pay attention to any strange smells. A burning smell may indicate that your transmission is overheating or that your transmission fluid has burnt up. Your mechanic can address either of these concerns.

3. Transmission Fluid Leaking

After leaving your vehicle in a parking space or garage for a time, check underneath where the vehicle was resting. The presence of a red, sweet-smelling fluid pooled beneath where the vehicle was is a sign of a transmission fluid leak. Bring your vehicle in for service promptly to get that leak patched up.

4. Grinding or Shaking During Shifting

If your transmission is having issues, there may be an increase in the friction you feel when shifting gears. Pay attention for this difference in the feel of your vehicle as you’re driving it. If you notice anything outside of the ordinary, take your vehicle in for maintenance to get the problem corrected.

5. Vehicle Fails to Change Gears

While some of these issues may be noticeable while driving, other transmission problems won’t let you get very far in the first place. If your vehicle is unresponsive when you try to shift from park into drive, you’ll need to get service for your transmission in order to get the vehicle back into working order.

6. Slipping Through Gears Unexpectedly

One scary situation that transmission issues can create is when your vehicle abruptly changes gears without you prompting it to. This can cause you to lose traction on the road, potentially leading to a loss of control of the vehicle. If you ever notice any erratic gear-shifting, get your vehicle looked at by your mechanic as soon as possible.

7. Check Engine Light is On

As with so many issues, the first indication that you have of a problem with your transmission may be the check engine light activating on your dashboard. This light could be a sign of many different problems, including transmission issues. Take your vehicle in for a check-up at your dealership to get to the bottom of the problem.
