At the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, BMW showed off a new futuristic motorcycle design imagining what the next few decades might hold for transportation. With a look that would fit right into a sci-fi blockbuster movie, the BMW Vision Next 100 is a zero-emissions motorcycle with a unique carbon fiber design that flexes and adapts to keep its balance as the rider steers.

“Flexibility is something that motorcycle designers usually try to avoid in frames, so it’s an unconventional solution,” says Autoblog.com in its coverage. “The upshift is that there are no joints or bearings involved in steering, or in the suspension. You’ll note there’s no swing arm, or anything recognizable as a spring or damper. That’s because the tires act as the bike’s suspension.”

BMW predicts that the lightweight and adaptive design, combined with active self-balancing technology, and improved traction and stability control, mean that the bike would never fall over. This would allow riders to wear lighter clothing and forgo the helmet. Instead, the BMW Vision Next 100 motorcycle would be controlled through a set of goggles, worn in place of a helmet, which would control the bike by tracking eye movements.

No motorcycle fan should expect to see the BMW Vision Next 100 on the streets of Fayetteville, NC anytime soon. BMW is firm that this concept motorcycle is a vision of the future and not a plan. However, BMW is making impressive leaps forward in self-driving technology.
