There’s a lot to like about plug-in hybrids. They help extend the time between trips to the gas station, but the combustion engine can still be relied on for longer road trips. Fortunately, BMW makes four plug-in hybrid options, all of which are available at your local BMW dealer.

3 Series

Part of BMW’s 3 Series, which also includes gas-powered models, the 330e plug-in hybrid combines a 2-liter engine with an electric motor, all of which adds up to 288 horsepower. This five-seat luxury sedan is capable of running for 22 miles on electric power alone before the engine kicks in. The 330e offers a luxurious cabin and an athletic chassis that makes it fun to drive.

This vehicle has a 14.9-inch infotainment display and plenty of standard features, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a WiFi hotspot.

X5

The X5 offers three different powertrains, one of which is the plug-in hybrid xDrive50e. This SUV comes with a turbocharged inline-six as well as an electric motor, for a combined 483 horsepower. The five-seat xDrive50e can go for up to 40 miles of electric-only driving. The cabin of this vehicle is filled with luxury features, including front seats that are both heated and power adjustable, a sunroof, dual-zone climate control, and a power liftgate.

Another notable feature of this vehicle is the cargo space. There’s 56.5 cubic feet of rear cargo space, and that figure grows to 72.3 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded down. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on this vehicle, as is a smartphone charging pad and a WiFi hotspot.

7 Series

The 750e xDrive, new for 2024, is the plug-in hybrid in the 7 Series. This five-passenger vehicle has a turbocharged 3-liter inline-six and an electric motor, which together add up to 483 horsepower. The battery on this vehicle allows it to travel for more than 35 miles on pure electric power.

This vehicle is known for its incredibly smooth ride and its hushed interior. There are also some great tech features onboard, including an optional 31.3-inch rear entertainment display. Standard driver-assistance features include automated emergency braking and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.

XM

The XM SUV runs on a twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that’s backed up by a plug-in hybrid. The result is a powerful vehicle with 738 horsepower and the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. In addition to power, this vehicle has a richly trimmed cabin and all of the latest driver-assistance programs.
