Fayetteville, NC is the county seat of Cumberland County. It is most famous for being the home of Fort Bragg, but the sixth-largest city in North Carolina has a lot more to offer than close proximity to a large Army installation. Today, we’re taking a closer look at three of the most fun things to stop and do while driving around the downtown area of the city.

1. Tour the Airborne and Special Operations Museum

If you’re interested in military history, you’ll love touring the US Army Airborne & Special Operations Museum at 100 Bragg Blvd. It is one of the best museums the state has to offer and pays tribute to the history of special ops and airborne operations going back to the 1940s.

2. Step Back in Time at the 1897 Poe House

You can also find the home of Josephine and Edgar Allen Poe at 206 Bradford Ave in downtown Fayetteville. The museum was named after the year the home was constructed in the 19th century. However, you should know that the author Edgar Allen Poe did not live in this home.

It was a Fayetteville local and his wife who owned the home. While touring the home, you’ll learn about a lot more than what Mr. Poe did for Cumberland County as a politician, business owner, and civic leader. You’ll also learn about what life looked like for children and women in the house, social changes the Poes experienced while living in the home, and technological changes that were taking place in Cumberland County in the early 1900s.
