Our city of Fayetteville, NC was established in 1783, and we’ve come a long way from our small beginnings. We’ve never lost touch with our roots, and we have numerous museums that highlight our fascinating story. We’d like to share with you some of our favorites historical attractions that will tell you more about us and our city.

Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum

Transportation is as crucial for us as for any other city. This museum collection has a wide variety of artifacts and exhibits that highlight this fact. it’s housed in a lovingly restored 19th-century railway building. The main building is filled with exhibits and memorabilia that catalog the area from prehistory to the 20th century. The steamboat interactive exhibit is a definite crowd-pleaser.

The annex building has many more displays, including a recreated 1950s gas station and a vintage steam pump engine. You can choose either a self-guided or guided tour. Whichever you choose, you’re guaranteed an informative experience. The museum is located at 325 Franklin Street.

Museum of the Cape Fear

This museum is a regional branch of the North Carolina Museum of History and focuses specifically on Fayetteville and the Cape Fear area. The museum opened in 1988 and contains an incredible variety of objects and information from the Native Americans to the present day. Exhibits cover road and steamboat transportation, slavery, and the local textile and naval stores industries.

You can also learn about Fayetteville’s part in the Civil War and even visit a reconstructed, fully-stocked, early 20th-century store. While you’re here, you can also visit the restored 1897 Poe House and Arsenal Park, which are both on the museum grounds. You’re free to browse the exhibits at your leisure, and the museum docents are available to provide a wealth of information if you ask them. The museum can be found at 801 Arsenal Avenue.

North Carolina Veterans Park

North Carolina is proud to be known as the “Most Military Friendly” state, and our city is a fitting place for this park. It honors servicemen and women from all branches of the military, both living and dead. The park is a beautiful, yet poignant, reminder of the sacrifices made by Veterans and their families for our country.

The park incorporates artificial and natural elements to skillfully represent North Carolina. It’s located at 300 Bragg Boulevard and is open from Tuesday to Saturday.
