Does Your BMW Need a New Catalytic Converter?

The catalytic device, or converter, is an integral component of your vehicle’s emission system. It is responsible for reducing the harmful gases emitted from the engine as it burns fuel. But, over time, converters become clogged with sediment causing the interior components to fail and must be replaced. Here are some signs that your car might need a new catalytic converter, and if it does, let the pros at your BMW dealer take care of it.

Have the “Check Engine” Light Verified at Your BMW Dealer

Most modern vehicles, such as the technologically advanced BMW X5, come equipped with sophisticated sensors meant to warn drivers when a problem with the converter is detected. If one of the sensors detects an issue, the “check engine” indicator light will start glowing. However, several other engine issues could trigger it as well. Therefore, if the “check engine” light is on, it’s best to head to your local dealership for a diagnostic test.

Exhaust Smells Like Rotten Eggs

There are so many chemical pollutants in car exhaust that even a brand-new converter can’t eliminate all of them. These chemicals give exhaust gases their mild but easily discernible odor. But, if these gases remain unfiltered because of a faulty converter, your car’s exhaust will smell like rotten eggs. So if you step out of your vehicle and catch a whiff of a putrid odor lingering in the air, it’s probably time for a new catalytic device.

Slow Acceleration

As your converter filters the exhaust fumes, trace amounts of sediment are collected. Over time, this sediment slowly clogs the converter, which hinders the escape of gases. Accelerating creates an abundance of exhaust gases, and with nowhere to go, the gases are forced back into the engine. As pressure from the gases builds within the engine, it must work harder to expel the exhaust fumes, causing it to bog down.

Rattling Noises

The filter inside the converter looks like a metal honeycomb. As the catalytic device wears out, pieces of the filter break loose and rest on the metal converter housing. While you’re driving, the filter pieces will bounce around inside the converter, making an audible rattling sound. Although the intensity of the rattle varies, if you turn down the stereo and listen carefully, it should be relatively easy to notice.

A fully functioning converter is essential because it will limit the pollutants released into the atmosphere, benefitting us and the environment. If your car is slow to accelerate or it’s making rattling noises, come see us at Valley Auto World BMW, and we’ll take care of the problem.
